Child Sex Abuse (CSA) is an issue that many people are not informed on. People don’t address this topic because of how uncomfortable it can be but regardless we should work harder to end this issue. In order to end this issue people need to learn more about what CSA is and what it consists of. CSA causes long-term physical/psychological effects and studies show that there have been cases where young boys who were sexually abused have a higher rate of becoming abusers themselves (Boyles).
According to the article, “Child Sex Abuse“, the organization RAINN, explains that “a form of child abuse that includes sexual activity with a minor, and can be both physical and non-physical.” RAINN clearly states that a child cannot consent to any form of sexual activity and when someone takes advantage of that then it can cause the child to have negative long-term psychological effects.
Negative Effect of CSA
Adults Surviving Child Abuse (ASCA) is an organization that aims to end CSA. This organization wrote an article, “Impact of Child Abuse“, which states that children who have been sexually abused grow up to have increased medical issues, relationship problems, social disconnection and behavioral issues. These victims are also associated with suicidal behaviors and have higher rates of smoking and substance abuse. Some negative impacts of CSA on mental health include: depression, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress, personality disorders and poor self-esteem (ASCA). If and when a child goes through such trauma, they need to seek medical attention whether it is physical or psychological so that they can work on avoiding these issues as they grow older.
Another issue that people are not informed on is the studies that show victims of CSA becoming abusers themselves. Salynn Boyles article,”Do Sexually Abused Kids Become Abusers?“, states that 1 in 10 male victims of sexual abuse grow up to become abusers themselves. Boyles informs us that the risk is much higher for boys who were sexually victimized and come from dysfunctional families. If a boy is abused by a female then they have an even higher rate of becoming an abuser (Boyles). It’s crazy to think that a victim of CSA would grow up to become the same person who victimized them. Child sex abuse is a harsh reality but I believe the more people are aware, the closer we are to ending this issue .
